Paying it Forward to your local schools - No "Extra" Money Needed

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!

With all the budget cuts nationwide, and our own budget uncertainty in New York State, I really worry about what is being cut in our local schools. I myself have a special needs child that needs a lot of extra help in the classroom - when I hear there are cuts I get nervous how that will affect my child. And now, with 2 of my children in school, and even mmore cuts being talked about - I think its time for parents to help in anyway we can to keep our schools the best they can be. While I want to help the schools, I don't want my taxes to go up any higher than any of you do, so I've looked into some programs that don't really cost me any extra money - just a little extra time.

Program #1 - Box Tops for Education

If you have a child in school you have probably heard about this program, or maybe you have seen the "box tops" on products you use everyday. The Box Tops for Education Program raises thousands of dollars every year by donating 10 cents off of each label that is collected and "donated" to the school of your choice. Most schools have a committee dedicated to raising money through this program, and have a set goal for the amount they would like to raise. I just checked my children's future elementary school, and they hope to raise over $3000 in Box Tops Funds this upcoming school year. Here is how the Math works out:

$3500 in funds raised
That is 35,000 Box Tops needed
Average 700 students in an elementary school
= 50 Box Top Labels needed from each student for the year
26 school weeks in a year = less than 2 labels a week needed from each student.

Certainly $3500 is an attainable goal - especially when we use products like Cheerios, Hamburger Helper, Kleenex, Toilet Paper, Diapers, Ziploc baggies and hundreds more every day!

You can get more information, and coupons for Box Top Products, from the Box Top website.

Program #2:  Campbell's Label's for Education

This is another well known program that can help ease a school's budget. For this program, you collect the labels off of Campbell's products like Soup, Pepperidge Farm Snacks, Prego, V-8 and even BIC Pens! Each label is worth either 1, 5, or 10 points each. The school sends in the labels and then gets to choose items out of a catalog that Campbell's will donate. each item in the catalog is worth a specific amount of points. Schools can get basic supplies like Crayons and Chalk and more sophisticated equipment like guitars, Flat Panel Televisions, Laminators and Microscopes.

You can also get coupons for these participating products at the Campbell's Kitchen Website. For more information on the Label's for Education Program, visit Label's for Education  Website.

Program #3:  TerraCycle

Terracycle is always coming up with fun and cool ways to recycle, but they also have come up with a way (actually 6 ways) Moms can go green, reduce waste at home, AND raise money for their kids school and/or favorite charity. Terracycle realizes Moms have enough things to think about without wondering how to reduce the amount of waste leaving their home and heading to the local landfill. So they have come up with six new Brigades (read as free collection programs!) to make it easier than ever for parents to eliminate waste from their home while raising money for a school or charity of their choice. All you  need to do is collect and send in the packaging you discard every day, TerraCycle pays the postage and contributes two cents per unit of waste returned! Participating Products include Colgate, Ziploc, Country Crock, Neosporin, Aveeno and Many Many More!

For more information on participating products and how to sign up your school, check out the TerraCycle Site.

Program #4:  Ink Cartridge Recycling

This was a program I saw in my son's school last year, and now I've been saving up to donate this year. Empties4Cash runs this program and makes it very easy to get money for the school. You send in your empty ink cartridges to the school collection boxes (provided free from empties4cash). The school doesn't have to sort ANYTHING, they send in the ink cartridges (shipping paid by empties4cash) and the school gets paid within 5 days! I'm sad that I didn't send in my empties last year!

For more information on this program or to sign your child's school up - visit empties4cash now!
