"Barbie: A Rare Beauty" Book Review

According to Mattel, a Barbie doll is sold once every 3 seconds. If you are in my age range…the mid twenties..(ouch! Ok, ok…)..the mid Thirties…you know ALL about Barbie. I think Barbie became a mega hit when I was a child, or at least really commercialized with all of her accessories and careers. I owned so many different Barbies - Great Shape Barbie, Day to Night Barbie (complete with reversible skirt for going from her office to party on the town!), and many, many more. My sister and I had a TON of Barbie “stuff” - a Barbie car, a Barbie pool, Barbie’s apartment/office and I believe we had 2 Barbie beds. Every birthday I think all I wanted was Barbie everything!
I can’t wait until my girls are ready for Barbie mania - I want to sit and play with them…it will bring back so many nice memories!
The sad part for me is that Barbie has become SO commercialized that my girls will never know how far Barbie has come from when she was “born”. I can’t imagine what Barbie will be like 10 years from now - look how much she has changed since the very first Barbie in 1959 that was introduced at the New York Toy Fair. You’ve probably seen pictures of her - Barbie with a Blonde ponytail wearing a black & white striped swimsuit. She sold for $3 at the time, but has fetched $25,000 at an auction in 2006 - putting the sale in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most ever paid for a Barbie doll.
How do I know these interesting facts about Barbie? I was sent the book, “Barbie: A Rare Beauty” a glamorous guide to Barbie‘s first 50 years showcasing stunning vintage dolls, classic fashion sets, one of kind rarities, store displays and many never before-seen items - all acquired by Sandi Holder during two decades of Barbie doll collecting. Holder’s Barbie collection came about through unfortunate circumstances, but she began by attending doll shows, buying duplicates and assessing the market and was soon selling vintage dolls from two plastic crates in her garage. In 1989, she opened her Doll Attic in a storefront in the San Francisco Bay area. Holder has appeared on The Today Show, and the Doll Attic has been featured in The New York Times, CNN.com, Newsweek, and others.
The book Barbie: A Rare Beauty, brings back so many great childhood memories, along with facts about Barbie I never knew. There is an abundance of pictures of so many of the Barbies that have been produced, along with her accessories and clothing. The book also details how Holder now has expanded the Doll Attic into a “multi-faceted operation - retail store front, party venue (for birthday parties), auction house and museum”.
I originally thought I would gift this book to someone I know, but I love it so much now I can't bare to part with it! If you or someone you know is a Barbie lover, a history buff, or even better BOTH. This book is for you or them!

I checked and Amazon has this book for just $19.80 - an awesome price for a little piece of nostalgic history!

.

Many of my readers have read that I have a son that has Autism. My Michael is the sweetest boy in the world, but it breaks my heart to see him struggle with "everyday" things a "typical" child would have no problem with. Michael is almost 5, and still cannot tell me what he "did that day" at school. He has just learned to ride a tricycle, put on his socks and pants, and drink from a cup.
Michael flaps his arms and plays with hangers (the plastic ones from kids clothing), rather than his multitude of toys he has in the house. He is constantly on the move, and breaks apart with any routine changes. He doesn't understand concepts, or that if he runs into the road a car will run him over. He has to be literally taught everything. All parents teach their kids to use a fork, get dressed & tie their shoes. Michael has to be taught those things and how to play with toys, how to interact with other kids and adults and essentially how to exist in life. The things that come "naturally" to most kids don't come "second nature" to Michael. It is hard sometimes for me to remember not to get upset when he does certain things - I have to remember he wasn't taught that yet.
For all of of Michael's limtations, he has so many postive characteristics that I am so thankful for as a mom. Michael laughs, and has a huge smile. He loves his siblings an will "play" with them - almost as you would expect any child to play with their brother and sisters. Academically Michael is well above the other children in his class. He has been reading words for almost a year as well as writing his name. He knew his letters and numbers, colors & shapes (even the weird ones like a pentagon!) at 2 years old. He now can tell you the names of many of the dinosaurs - his latest obsession.
I am one of the lucky moms of a child with autism. I was able to get Michael diagnosed early - at age 22 months. Because of that and intense therapy early on (and continuing) as well as using natural methods to fight the autism - Michael is much better than many children with autism. I have friends that have yet to hear their child say "I Love you Mommy" and I have friends that have yet to hear their child speak at all.
There are many organizations out there that research autism and how to help these kids in so many aspects of their lives. Autism Speaks is probably one of the largest organizations right now fighting every day for our kids and now they have a neat way you can help join the fight.

Autism Speaks, North American's largest autism science and advocacy organization announced the launch of Puzzlebuilder, the first of it's kind social network driven fundraising campaign that enables people of all ages to help solve the puzzle of autism - the fastest growing serious developmental disorder in the U.S.  Anyone can become a Puzzlebuilder by uploading their favorite photos to create their own digital puzzle or by buying a piece of a participating celebrity , friend or family member's puzzle.  Each puzzle piece is $10 and all funds benefit Autism Speaks.  You will have until the end of the year!

To show support for the one in 110 children, one in 70 boys, struggling with autism spectrum disorders, 110 of Hollywood's brightest stars, television personalities, musicians and professional athletes including Steve Carell, Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Peyton Manning, Mitchel Musso and Holly Robinson Peete have signed on to help Autism Speaks create the world's largest digital puzzle!  Just head over HERE for all the info!

Update:  You can win great gifts if you sale the most!  Just head over HERE and check out the schedule and don't forget "The Gift of Giving"!
