My Fight to Save our Schools...

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!
I am one mom of millions in the US, in New York State and in Onondaga County - that is disgusted and scared of cuts to funding for schools this next year. I can’t tell the people who make the budget where to cut , I just know that cutting Funding to schools cannot be done. Especially for me as a parent of 4 children who have been in early intervention and without it would be struggling to get through New York’s rigorous educational system.

As someone who likes to save money, my focus is on what I CAN do for schools, last night I attended my first School Board Meeting - ever. My oldest son will be entering kindergarten in the fall as a special needs student and I have great concerns about funding cuts for education and special education. I wanted to know how they planned NOT to cut to save our kids educational future.

Basically as it was explained to me last night, my school district is short 9 million dollars in funds necessary for next years budget. The district does have a grant they will be using that brings the total down to 5.9 Million - still an enormous amount of money missing.

We were told that the district would have to hike taxes over 18% to make up the shortfall, which was unacceptable “they knew”. What? What is unacceptable is losing 150 Jobs in the district coupled with last years cuts of the same amount. I don’t know how many jobs are in the district but let’s say there were 3000 last year - that is a 10% loss of jobs! Insane.

Schools are not like businesses that can say - Hey, lets cut 10% of our work force so we can stay afloat. Well, for the most part, if a retailer does this the consumer can just “go to another store”. This isn’t so with our schools! We can’t just send our kids somewhere else (again in general - I know there is the Private Schools Option) - we NEED these schools staffed with the most possible and the best possible. We don’t need stressed teachers with 35 kids in a class.

They said last night that an 18% tax rate increase would = approximately $357 more in taxes a year per $100,000 home. For me., I’m OK with that. I’d gladly cut $1 out of my day to save 150 jobs and more cuts. But I know this isn’t possible for everyone - Senior Citizens on a fixed Income, Single Parents struggling to make ends meet - this would be devastating to any of their budgets.
So what is a parent to do? Go with the flow and let the cuts be made because it “doesn’t affect me?”. Oh, I beg to differ. If it affects your child’s education it affects you.

MyCNYMommy has several thousand readers each month - all looking for ways to save on their budgets. I would think that you, MyCNYMommy Readers - would love to be able to help your local schools (wherever you are) save money and raise money for these kids in need. So, in the coming weeks and months I welcome any ideas you, the readers, have in how we can help these schools raise the funds needed to not have to cut jobs and activities. The reality of finding 6 million dollars is slim yes, but finding $0 is even worse. I have some ideas that I will pass along - and anyone that would like to help implement these ideas please let me know! Moms are great weapon against wrong doings - and moms that work together are a POWERFUL force. Let’s use that force to do some great things we can proud of in the future.

Share your Breakfast and Pay it Forward to a Child in Need :)

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!
Kellogg's has launched a new program called Share Your Breakfast that runs through July 31st.

Kellogg's goal is to help share 1 million breakfasts for deserving school kids by the start of the 2011-2012 school year. They will donate the monetary equivalent of school breakfasts to Action for Healthy Kids, which is a nonprofit organization that focuses on childhood obesity and undernourishment.

Here is how you can help...it is very easy:

All you have to do is take a picture of what you are eating for breakfast and upload it to the Share Your Breakfast website.  You can even take a picture on your cell phone and text your photo with the word "Share" to 21534.

You can also:

  • Visit the “Help A Child” tab on Kellogg's Facebook page and upload your photo straight from there!

  • On National Breakfast Day, Tuesday, March 8th, only, there's one more way to share your breakfast.  All you have to do is tweet a description of your breakfast (no photo required) with #ShareUrBreakfast on March 8, National Breakfast Day - every tweet will count as one more breakfast shared!

  • So share what you had for breakfast with Kellogg's and help a child!

    Thanks My Springfield Mommy!
