Extreme Couponing: The Real Deal

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!

So, TLC's Extreme Couponing is on again tonight...are you going to watch? I honestly haven't watched since the first episode...but I know many of the CNYMommy readers are on Facebook!

I wanted to give a few points about the show:

* The show is a SHOW - the MAIN purpose is for ratings, not to help people.
* That being said, I have seen that some people are learning the tips we "couponers" use every day to save money!
* The people on the show are doing extreme shopping trips that they have planned for several hours - this is not what a typical person would be doing. (Although to save the most does require some time for planning)

I hope you are getting the savings points that the show is bringing up:

* Pair a sale with a coupon to get the most savings
* Buy enough to get you through until the next time the item goes on sale, avoiding paying full price. (62 Bottles of mustard is not necessary, but 4-5 may be since Mustard rarely goes on sale and/or has a coupon)
* Many stores have coupons that can be "stacked" with Manufacturer Coupons - which saves you the BIG bucks.

If you are new to couponing - I have a few resources on my site that can help you to save money:

*Coupon Database - There are over 4000 coupons available each and every day. Use my database to see of your favorite products have a coupon right now!

* Coupons101 - a "How to" on how to begin using coupons to save you the most money on your grocery bill each week!

* Weekly Ads - We've already done all the work for you with matching up the sale prices in the circulars and the coupons that are available. Such a time saver for you!

*If you are just starting to coupon - don't worry if you don't have enough newspaper inserts available - you can print coupons from coupons.com, smartsource, and redplum - every day! You can also order coupons for your favorite products from CouponsByDede - a clipping Service. I did this when I first started couponing to get a nice stockpile of coupons to draw from.

There is so much I would love to share with everyone - I hope you will stick around MyCNYMommy - we really appreciate each and every reader! :)

Long Live Taste, Long Live the Tomato

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!
I may have mentioned a time or two that I am of Italian Descent (really Sicilian but let's not get techincal, shall we?). My husband - is the polar opposite  - in foods anyways. He can't stand tomatoes at all.
My grandparents are still alive, bless their hearts - and going strong even in their mid- eighties. During the Spring to Summer and early Fall months I head over with some/all or none of my kids and meet my father their for a traditional Ziti Dinner. Yum YUM! I've been going since my oldest son was born, my father has been for years.
Just tonight on the way home I was thinking of what I could make for them - so that they don't have to cook for all of us each week. My gramma makes her homemade sauce every week. And it issss Good! I still am not so good with sauce so when I got home I googled Tomato Dinners - and found this super yummy looking recipe:

Ingredients:

·         PAM® Olive Oil No-Stick Cooking Spray
·         1 cup chopped white onion (1 cup = 1 large)
·         2 cans (14.5 oz each) Hunt's® Diced Tomatoes, undrained
·         1/4 cup prepared basil pesto
·         Hot cooked pasta, chicken or fish, optional

Directions:

Spray large skillet with cooking spray. Heat over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir 5 minutes, or until tender.
Add tomatoes and simmer 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Stir in pesto just before serving.
Serve with 1 pound dry pasta (such as fusilli, spaghetti or penne), cooked according to package directions. May also be served over cooked chicken breasts or fish.

I can't wait to try this recipe out and see if my grandparents like it. What I like is that the recipe is healthy.  My grandparents are fairly healthy, but their normal Tuesday Night Dinner consists of Ziti, homemade
meatballs, and sausage - all cooked in the same sauce that is served over the ziti. So good - but not so good for you. I've noticed my grandmother dishes out all of the meats and keeps alot of the sauce to herself. If you saw her - she is this little petite slim woman - who obviosuly knows the health benefits of a tomato.
The US Government released new guidelines last year (http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2010.asp)
about health benefits of the tomato.

Here are some of those facts:

The human body absorbs more Lycopene from processed or cooked Tomatoes Products , such as Hunt's canned tomatoes
Second only to Potatoes, the Tomato is America's favorite non-strachy vegetable and  accounts for 85% of the Lycopene consumed in the U.S.
Tomatoes are the most important non-starchy vegetable in the American Diet. They not only contain high levels of carotenoid anti-oxidants such as lycopene, but also serve as a significant source of Vitamin C, Fiber & Postassium in the American Diet.

My grandparents have been eating them every week for 80+ years, and that tells me something! Check out this article, “Tomato Consumption and Health: Emerging Benefits” which details the health benefits of tomatoes. Here are some tomato facts that Hunt's sent over:

An article published in the March/April 2011 American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine titled “Tomato Consumption and Health: Emerging Benefits,” demonstrates the significant nutritional advantages of increasing tomato consumption. Emerging research underscores the relationship between consuming tomatoes and tomato products with reduced risk of certain cancers, heart disease, ultraviolet light-induced skin damage, osteoporosis, and other conditions.

Did you know tomatoes are good for your heart? (It’s easy to remember because they’re red.)  They are low in calories, but rich in nutrients like potassium, fiber and the POWERFUL antioxidant called lycopene.
*The lycopene in canned tomatoes, like Hunt’s, is easier for your body to use than from raw tomatoes, and you get seven times more lycopene from canned tomatoes than from the raw version.  Hunt’s tomatoes are convenient to use in lots of recipes.
*In fact, because tomatoes are so nutritious, the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans say people should try to eat one more serving of them each day.
*All of Hunt’s tomatoes are grown in California and are 100 percent natural.
*Hunt’s tomatoes come in lots of varieties, including No Salt Added.
*Tomatoes are a superfood!

I would love to hear your stories of who you have in your life you can dedicate a healthier lifestyle that
includes Tomatoes!

*This is a sponsored Post from Hunt's and the Motherhood. All opinions expressed are my own.
