Rebbeca & her daughter :)

Today's Guest post is from Rebecca, of CNYMamas.com  - a "quirky" blog about - stuff for moms! Today's post is a special little post about Earth Day! Enjoy!

Earth Day is (today), April 22nd. Take some time to talk with your kids about what it means to be kind to the earth and Think Globally and Act Locally! Join in at the B Kind 2 Earth’s Facebook Page. There are oodles of great ideas being shared for families that there that can trickle into spring and summer. OCRRA has some ideas on their website as well [link]. They offer these tips to reduce credit card offers AND junk mail:
- Call 1-888-5OPTOUT  (1-888-567-8688 ) or visit www.optoutprescreen.com to be removed from the four major credit bureau mailing lists.
- Visit www.dmachoice.org and follow the steps to remove yourself from mailing lists.
- Check out www.catalogchoice.org to opt out of paper catalog mailings.
- Visit the Yellow Pages website to remove yourself from phone book distributions.
- Contact the companies that have sent you unwanted mail and tell them to remove your name from their mailing lists. Many of them have 800 numbers you can call.
In Your House:
~ We know to say goodbye to plastic bags (or use them again to pick up trash or doggie business) but think about banashing papertowels and reusing wash & dish cloths. With the amount of laundry we already do, it doesn’t add much to our utlities and I like to reuse things.
~ Save milk jugs, yogurt containers and be creative. Our daughter pretty much scolded me the other day when I went to recycle a milk container…she told me it would make an excellent tower for her princesses. Here are some craft ideas.
~ Buy bigger bags of snacks, crackers, etc. and use containers that can be washed and used again. Nothing fancy, but durable enough they can withstand being launched across the back of a moving vehicle.
In Your Neighborhood:
~Take a stroll with bags and pick up litter along the way. I know our local park & playground was full of trash that had gotten lost over the winter. Make a game of it, everyone picking up at least 10 items.
~In the city, call the arborist about planting a street tree on your property. Send requests to the City Arborist, Stephen Harris, at sharris@ci.syracuse.ny.us. His phone number is 473-4330 x3014.If your town or village doesn’t have this service, plant a tree on your own.
~ Buy local, farmers markets, vendors and from businesses. Support these local businesses, owned by moms!
This just in from Manlius (call your local town or village to see if they are doing something similar). I will post anything I come across. This Saturday, April 23rd at 9am, the Village of Manlius Recreation Dept. is hosting an Earth Day Clean up event. If you are interested in being a part of this morning, please meet us at the Manlius Village Centre in the auditorium. We will provide a light breakfast to all of our hard working volunteers! We will also provide gloves and bags, but if you want to bring your own that would be great! If you know that you are definitely going to attend, please call Kristen so she has an approximate count of volunteers at 682-7887.
