Remembering 9/11: 10th Anniversary Tribute

Where were you when the world stopped turning? Words that we all know what they refer to, and maybe you all have heard the song too.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 I thought I would share what I remember from that day and invite any of you to share if you would like to - either on the comments below or on Facebook.

In 2001, I was a sale manager at a department store in Shoppingtown Mall. That morning, I was the only manager on duty, most of the other managers and the store manager were due to come in that afternoon for the closing shift. Being just after school had started, I was re-doing a huge sock wall (which is exactly like it sounds  - a big wall with socks hanging on it). All was quiet as I moved socks around and added new fall socks to the mix. Strange that I remember that. I can even remember I was wearing a long skirt that day...

It was around 8:30ish when a manager in training came running up the escalator yelling for me. She was English and had an accent so when she blurted out, "The World Trade Center is on fire!".. I thought I had misunderstood. "What??" She told me again, this time yelling a little and more urgently, "The World Trade Center in New York City!!". I couldn't believe what I was hearing..thinking she must have been mistaken. Together we walked back down the escalator and when I asked where she heard the news, she told me - an employee's daughter worked at the Trade Center building and she had heard it in the car on her way into work.

We only had one TV in the store - in the back that we used for training. But news had already spread and someone on the maintenance staff I think had gotten the TV to work as a TV. I headed to the back with the M-I-T and we watched the coverage. We were standing there watching when we saw another plane fly right into the building and heard Charlie Gibson on ABC (and others around him) exclaimed, "A Plane has just hit another tower ". I remember tearing up... and being scared to death. We watched the coverage and just as I was headed to do our morning meeting with all of the associates about that days events in the store - Charlie Gibson reported the Pentagon was on fire. Numb. I was just in total shock and even more scared.

I went into that meeting that day and everyone had already heard (because of the employee whose daughter worked at the towers) and I stood there in just about tears and I recall saying, "Who cares about coupons right now?" I invited employees to come to the back area and watch the TV a few at a time. Very few customers came in that morning and the ones that did - we asked why. Most hadn't heard the news.

Right before noon I remember hearing a plane and looking up to see one flying overhead - which made me terrified because I knew by then all planes were grounded but I knew that some planes were missing then. The plane ended up being military, but I was scared for days whenever I heard/saw a plane.

The store eventually closed early that day, as much of the country did. I went home and tried to reach my family in Florida while watching television coverage. September 11th was just a sad, sad day.

Where were you that horrible day?
