How to Save by Shopping in your Pantry

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!

How does your pantry look right now? Stuffed? Bare? Half-full of a hodge podge of miscellaneous items? Before I started couponing and making an effort to save on how I shopped, my pantry was usually about 1/4 full most of the month with various pieces to a meal. I rarely looked in it before going grocery shopping and many times I came home with doubles and triples of something I already had. ( Now that I have learned to shop in bulk, I know that doubles and triples aren't always a bad thing. )

But, one of the key ways to save on groceries is to shop from your pantry first before shopping at the stores. Let me explain. Many pantries as I said above contain pieces of meals. Like the marinade for a meat, sauce for spaghetti, corn for a casserole. Most people find it easier to just buy the entire meal at the store rather than pieces of it. It is true that buying only bits and pieces could mean forgetting an item (and that makes me SO mad!), and less time consuming researching what you own already at home, but shopping in your pantry first saves money. Here are some tips on how to make this work, and following I have an example of how I recently shopped from my pantry for a weekend of groceries spending less than $15 at the store:

  • Keep your pantry organized. Cans together, boxed items together, marinades and bbq sauces together. Even better, organize your pantry like your grocery store is laid out. Condiments together, soups together, pastas and sauces together.
  • Use oldest first. Make sure to put away your newest groceries in the back. While pantry type items generally have a very long shelf life, if an item gets stuck in the back for too long it likely will expire and that is a big waste of money.
  • Pantry isn't just a cupboard. Pantry doesn't just mean dry, non-perishable foods. Things in your freezer and fridge count too! Taking stock of your food inventory means all of your food, fresh, frozen and non perishables.
  • Rotate Items. An effective pantry will not always look the same. There will always be some basic items stored, but it should vary by season and if you are shopping the sales it will look different every few months. Unless of course you eat the same foods every month.
In order to shop from your pantry, you need an open mind on what your meal plan for the week (or weekend or month, however much you are shopping for) will be. Before making your meal plan, and before making your grocery list, look and see what you already have at home. Got a pound of chicken breasts in the freezer? Have a jar of salsa in the pantry? All you need for crockpot salsa chicken is some cheese, black beans and maybe sour cream. Side dishes? Maybe you already have some cornbread in your pantry. Or biscuit mix? So many people keep frozen or canned corn on hand too. Walah! A meal. Now, for me, I always have some beans in my pantry. And I always have shredded cheese on hand too. Corn bread is a favorite here so again, another I keep on hand. For this meal, all I would need to buy is the sour cream and possibly the chicken though I usually have some of that in my freezer as well. When you make your grocery list, all you add is the missing items to the meal.

Another example. Maybe you have a package of Pork chops in your freezer leftover from the last Price Chopper BOGO Sale. And the last time bread crumbs went on sale you went a little crazy and bought 5 cans of it. (Yes, I really did do this :) ) Have feta cheese on your salad often? How about stuffed porkchops with feta and onion dipped in bread crumbs and baked? Honestly, I don't even know if this is a meal but it sounds good and I have all of these things on hand right now. :) Sides?  I might go buy some butternut squash and make a soup out of that. And, I think couscous would be something my kids would enjoy. Again, add the missing items to your grocery list. 2 meals done!

My personal example:
A couple of weeks ago we were getting low on fridge foods but had a pantry full of miscellaneous things. On a Friday evening I checked out my pantry and ran to the store to grab a weekend worth of groceries. Here is a picture of what I bought:

Friday night dinner - Home made pizza it was. I always have sauce on hand so all I bought was dough and cheese. Yes, taco cheese because I wanted it for another meal. Ever have taco cheese on a pizza? Delish. ;)

Saturday morning breakfast was cereal we already had at home. Lunch was ham sandwiches from the deli meat I already had at home. All I needed was the bread. Dinner was tacos and cheese roll ups with a corn casserole side. I bought cheese and creamed corn. I already had corn bread mix, corn, ground beef, shells, sour cream and taco seasoning and sauce in my fridge and pantry.

Sunday morning we finished the cereal before heading out to church. At lunch it was leftovers from Friday night and Saturday night. And for Sunday night, it was breakfast for dinner. French Toast from the bread I bought, eggs that were in my fridge and the sausage links I bought. Altogether I paid $13 and change for what I bought and it took us through the weekend.

Pantry shopping helps you save and for me personally it organizes my thoughts as I plan my meals for the week. Hoping this helped you to think a little different about how you shop for groceries. Tell me, what kinds of items do you keep on hand in your pantry or fridge/freezer?
