Symphoria's "Wicked Divas" Review

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!

I'm not sure what I thought the Symphony was supposed to be like. "The Money Pit" perhaps with a zealous conductor, or "Mr. Holland's Opus" maybe. Maybe the Symphony in Syracuse used to be like those, I can't say. I can only tell you how it is now. And now folks, it is FANTASTIC. Make sure you read thru this entire post for information on a discount code for tickets!

I am not a huge lover of the arts, though I love music. Always have. Typically though I love music I can dance and sing to. I was under the impression that 'one doesn't sing or dance' while at the Symphony. I've been proven wrong twice now by Symphoria.

The view just after the drive in...
I went to the February 13th show of "Wicked Divas" presented by Symphoria expecting to hear a song or two I might recognize and then just enjoy an evening away from my 5 children. If you recall, the weather that night was horrific. A white knuckle drive in while braving sub zero temperatures...I was shocked honestly that the audience was fairly full!

The line up for the show
A coffee for my date to warm him up and a glass of wine to chill me out after the anxious drive in - we settled into our seats almost in the center of the room. I have had different seats now for the last few events at the Civic Center and I want to note that not one seat was "bad".

The concert began and after a great mashup of tunes, out came two lovely ladies that tell us they will be singing tonight. (This is why you read the program beforehand - I had no idea!) All but 3 or 4 performances Emily Rozek & Julia Murney and sang along with the tunes of Broadway. It was AMAZING. THEY were amazing! I personally have never seen the show, "Wicked", and never had any interest to until the performances of these ladies!

Besides performing, they talked about themselves, the origins of the music and where they were the last time they sang the song. While it may seem pretentious, it was more of a feeling of being invited into their homes for singing around the piano. The entire evening felt very warm and cozy. Totally not what I expected. The 2 hour performance went by so quickly I was sad to know it had ended. And our drive back home in the cold was soon. ;/ A nice little end to the evening, the two singers met with fans and show attendees after the show signing autographs and taking selfies. That was kind of exciting for me! This is me and them below!

Me and the singing stars!
Luckily I am NOT entirely sad because there are several more shows from Symphoria this season! I have already bought my tickets for the March 19th show of Disney tunes! I can't wait! I've also been asking who wants to see the Star Wars show in May even though I am not a fan of Star Wars I know the show will be terrific!

Besides Star Wars & Disney, there are many others shows before the end of the season:

February 27 - Shakespeare Celebration
Lush interpretations by three well-known composers inspired by Shakespeare mark the 400th anniversary of his death as Symphoria collaborates with the SU Department of Drama.

March 6 - Civic Morning Musicals’ 125th Anniversary Celebration
Pianist Steven Heyman performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, and violinist Sarah Crocker Vonsattel performs the Barber Violin Concerto

March 12 - Motion Dynamics
Acrobats and circus performers from CirqOvation join us for this performance, as we explore movement and motion with music. Ticket includes light refreshments and a cash bar.

March 19 - Disney In Concert: Magical Music From The Movies
A multimedia event featuring the original scores paired with footage from Disney movies.

April 3 - Copland & Stravinsky
We explore two 20th century giants with works that are more intimately sized including Appalachian Spring.

April 23 - Brahms Requiem
This epic choral masterpiece comes to life with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society, soprano Julia Ebner and baritone Timothy LeFebvre.

April 23 - Symphonic Safari (Kids Show 10:30AM)
Cartoonist Joe Wos joins us for this entertaining performance with live drawings of animals and music that was inspired by them.

May 1 - Birth Of The Concerto
Violinist Jeremy Mastrangelo and Symphoria musicians are featured as we explore the birth of the concerto, with works ranging from Bach to Mendelssohn.

May 14 - Nielsen, Sibelius & Shostakovich
Gifted violinist Caroline Goulding performs Sibelius’ haunting violin concerto, followed by Shostakovich’s rousing Symphony No. 5.

May 21 - Star Wars And A Galaxy Far Away
The Force awakens with the music of Star Wars and other intergalactic adventures.

June 4 - Pictures At An Exhibition
Superstar violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performs the rhapsodic music of Ravel and Saint-SaĆ«ns with an introductory counterpoint in contemporary composer Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, which is both contemplative and celebratory. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition closes this special program.

And, if you check out this post you can find a discount code to save on tickets! Tell me which show you are attending. I might just see you there!

A little Trivia for you that was pointed out during the "Wicked Divas" Show. Symphoria comes from the Urban Dictionary meaning: The feeling of euphoria one gets after hearing an amazing piece of classical music, whether string ensemble, wind ensemble, full orchestra, or otherwise. There is no doubt that our Syracuse Symphoria produces an amazing feeling of euphoria several times throughout the performance. You simply must listen and feel it for yourself.

Disclosure: Tickets for the Wicked Divas Performance were provided by Symphoria.

I'll leave you with a little video of the amazing, "Over the Rainbow"...
